He was predeceased by: his parents, Benjamin Smith and Anne Smith (Jensen); his brother Mike Smith; and his siblings-in-law, Donn Kischer, Merlyn Baarts (Marsha), Jim Baarts, Gene Borchardt, Janice Bicknase (Ray) and Edythe Bonstead (Leonard).

He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Baarts of Fairmont; his son David Smith (Tammy) of Sherburn, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Whitney and Natalie Smith; his siblings, Virginia Kischer of Quimby, Evy Knockemus (Ward) of Theodore, Alabama, Bill Smith (Jean) of New Hope and Bob Smith (Mary) of Jackson, Minnesota; and his sisters-in-law, Lila Smith of Jackson, Marilyn Borchardt of Fairmont, Eunice Koestler of Fairmont and Dolores Baarts of Fairmont, Minnesota. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
