He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Barfknecht, Sr. and Ella Barfknecht (Klatt). He is survived by: his wife Marjorie; his daughter Brenda; and his sister Betty Homeier. He is also survived by nieces and cousins.

During this time he became certified for and volunteered for the Minnesota Reserve and First Aid Association, the Red Cross and the American Heart Association.
