He was predeceased by: his siblings, Joseph Nelson, Helen Sterling, Mary Lou Reddin and Elizabeth Nelson; his aunts, Maxine Martin, Virginia Ross and Mary McGee; and his stepson Gregory Hines.

He is survived by: his significant other Betty Frierson of Cape Girardeau; his brother Douglas Nelson (Debra) of Chicago; and his stepson Gerald Hines of Aurora. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
