He was predeceased by: his parents, Burl Smith and Celestia Osbon Smith; his son Michael E. J. Smith; and his siblings, Burley and Essie Carter.
He is survived by: his wife Mattie Jane Johnson; and his children, Ronnie Smith of Dexter, Larry Smith of Jackson, Sandra Jane Lindemann of Dexter and Trudy Lynn Smith of Dexter. He is also survived by six grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
