She was predeceased by : her parents, Eva Mae Butler and Gilbert; her husband Clarence Burnell Caldwell; her brother Vernell Butler; her granddaughter Lanisha Caldwell; her siblings, Gary Lee Butler and Ollie Mae Butler; her daughter-in-law Candice Caldwell; and her brothers, William Earl Butler and Robert Lee Butler.

She is survived by : her children, Marcus Burnell Caldwell, Jeremiah Lenard Caldwell (Miesha), Erica Monique Caldwell and Kendra Renae Thornton (Jayson); her grandchildren, Marquis Caldwell, Elijah Bruce, Ethan Trice, Erica Caldwell, Ayesha Thornton, Shahada Thornton and Jayson Thornton Jr.; and her sister Aretha Cole.

Ethel made it a point to ensure that her children had a foundation in Christ as well.
