She was predeceased by: her parents, Marie Hart and Joseph Tafaro. She is survived by: her sons, Jesse Kates (Stephanie) and Malcolm Kates (Heather); and her grandsons, Toby Kates and Jonas Kates.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to ilovemountains.org, an organization working to end mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia that Mary passionately supported.
