He was predeceased by : his parents, Erie P. Sparks and Lauria Sparks (Davis); his wife Emma Sparks (Claus); his son Brian Sparks; and his siblings, Paul Sparks, Betty Staats and Jerry Sparks.

He is survived by : his sons, Dr. James J. Sparks Jr. (Holly) of Verdigre, Dr. Robert W. Sparks (Dolores) of Kirksville and Steven W. Sparks (Jeanine) of Wright City, MO.; and his siblings, Barbara, Wiley, Riley (Skip), Larry, John, Nancy, Becky, Lonnie and Beverly.

Visitation was held on Friday, April 19th 2024 at 10:00 AM at the Fellowship Baptist Church (1701 Jamison St, Kirksville, MO 63501). A funeral service was held on Friday, April 19th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
