He was predeceased by: his fathers, Seth Swem and Virgil Swem (Butz); his son Dennis Swem; and his siblings, Thelma Lennick, Laura McSorley, Melvin Swem, Bobby Swem and William Swem.

He is survived by: his children, Susan Swem of Pleasant Hope, MO, Brenda Chester of Neosho, MO and Daniel Swem; and his grandchildren, Sandra, Tanner, Tori, Devin, Dalton and Drew. He is also survived by ten great grandchildren.
