He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Cates and Lilly Sisco-Cates; and his siblings, Clifford and Manita Strawn. He is survived by: his sons, Michael Cates (Debbie) of Branson, MO and Mark Cates (Liz) of Holden, MO; his grandsons, Coy (Ann), Chance (Laura) and Jeb (Amanda); his stepgrandson Jeremiah Bridges (Beth); his great grandchildren, Vanessa, Callie, Jackie, Whitney, Meredith, Camille, Abigail and Noelle; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Gabrian, Sirion and Darien; his siblings, Tom Cates and Carolyn Cunningham (Bryan); and his wife Reva Thompson. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.
