He was predeceased by: his parents, John Wesley Bates and Berneice Bates (Pierce); his wife Betty Bates (Young); his children, Mike Holt and Gina Torres; his sisters, Erma Miles and Goldie Salts; and also Charlotte Bates (Adam).
He is survived by: his children, Carla Bates of York, PA and Chris Bates (Cheryl) of St. Charles, MO; his brother-in-law Lonnie Salts of Rolla, MO; his grandchildren, Danielle Makrias, Samantha Williams, Aaron Holt, Christopher Bates, Jason Bates, Regan Bates, Brady Bates, Logan Bates and Isaac Bates; and his great grandchildren, Grace Makrias, Johnny Makrias, Ellie Holt, Phoenix Holt, Elaine Bates and Ryan Bates. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
