He was predeceased by: his parents, J. Marvin, Sr. Atkins and Velma Atkins (Erickson); his daughter Deborah K. Atkins; his grandsons, Aaron Hancock and Christopher Snyder; and his brother Billy R. Atkins, Sr..

He is survived by: his wife Sharon Ripper; and his sons, Billy S. Banks, J. Marvin Atkins III (Pat), David L. Atkins and James M. Atkins, Sr.. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated to Boy Scouts of America or to the St. Joseph Animal Shelter.
