He was predeceased by: his parents, Birdie Mae Winter McDowell and Edward Brooks McDowell; and his wife Deborah Lynn Jobe McDowell. He is survived by: his wife Teresa Mayhan McDowell of Courtland, MS; his children, Kelly McDowell of Batesville, MS, Kevin McDowell (Kimberly) of Batesville, MS, Josh McDowell of Jonesboro, AR, David Barefoot (Cynthia) of Charleston, MS, Jim Barefoot of Courtland, MS, Danny Jay Eastin (Amy) of Huntingdon, TN and William Jason Longmire (Sandy) of Huntingdon, TN; and his sister Dianne McDowell Brewer of Courtland, MS. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center or to Shiloh United Methodist Church.
