He was predeceased by: his parents, Gus Smart and Mariah Clemons Smart; his children, Willie James Lowery, Gregory Lowery and Teretha Sherrod; and his siblings, Tom Smart, Gus Smart (Rosie), John Lewis Smart, James Smart, Edward Smart, Benjamin Smart, Daisy Green (Jimmy) and Bertha Dora (Ben).

He is survived by: his daughter Rose Rice (Eddie).
