He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Myrtle Elizabeth Truett and James Franklin Shelnut, Sr.; his children, Erlene Hawkins Turner of Texas and Edward Earl Shelnut of Edwards, MS; his sister Hazel Carter of Haleyville, Alabama; his stepchildren, Nancy Sue Hawkins of California, Ralph Hawkins of Aurora and Larry Hawkins of Memphis, TN; and his nephew Talmadge Lee Carter of Haleyville, AL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN or a charity of the donor's choice.
