It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Mattie Jo Thornburg of Oxford, Mississippi, who passed away on October 20, 2025, at the age of 80, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Theron Johnson and Ludie Johnson; and her siblings, Louise Striplin, Martha Norwood and Harold Wayne Johnson.
She is survived by: her husband Don Thornburg of Abbeville, MS; her children, Darlene Samson (Johnny) of Joplin, MO, Greg Frye (Cynthia) of Oxford, MS, Lee Frye (Ashley) of Abbeville, MS and James Frye (Laci) of Oxford, MS; and her brother Billie Jean Johnson of Oxford, MS.. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 24th 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the New Hope Baptist Church (124 County Road 519, Como, MS 38619). A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 24th 2025 at 2:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and memorials in honor of Mattie Jo Thornburg be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (https://tinyurl.com.).
