He is survived by: his spouse Ed Ranzenhofer; his nephews, John E. Smith Jr. (Carol), Jeffrey N. Smith (Susan) and James C. Smith; his great-nieces, Madison, Molly, Jesika and Nicole; and his great-nephew Jackson.
He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha; the AMA; American Society of Nephrology; New York Academy of Science; Harvey Society; New York Heart Association; National Kidney Foundation and the American Society for the Advancement of Science.
