He was predeceased by : his parents, John Burton and Lula Mae Bailey Lanier; his wife Margaret Nifong Crotts Lanier; his children, Joe Lanier, Jr., Larry Crotts and Kathy Lanier; and his brother J. B. Lanier.

He is survived by : his children, Rickey Eugene Crotts (Okhui) of Lexington, Linda Cornatzer of Advance and Cindy Cornatzer (Dale) of Mocksville; his grandchildren, Charles Crotts (La Tisha), Chris Cornatzer (Sarah), Chad Cornatzer (Brooke), Brandi Patti (Victor), Derek Cornatzer, Christy Smith and Gene Smith; his great grandchildren, Garren Crotts, Brecken Crotts, Cainnen Crotts, Tyler Coble, Cameron Coble, Connor Cornatzer, Tate Cornatzer, Addison Dull, Charlie Dull, Baylor Grace Patti and Lexi Patti; and his daughters-in-law, Shirley Crotts and Mary Lanier. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
