He was predeceased by: his parents, James Chavis and Flora Ellen Smith Chavis; his sons, Mark Chavis and Christopher Chavis; and his sisters, Lucy Hulon, Barbara Goer, Mary Knight and Becky Jackson.
He is survived by: his grandchildren, Johnny Shaver (Holly), Jared Chavis (Brittany), Kelly Hathcock (Bucky), Joey Chavis (Anna), Hannah Lear (Brian), Brandon Chavis (Shannon), Brittany Chavis, Amber Chavis, Sierra Chavis, Sydnee Chavis and Ryan Chavis (Keosha). He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.
