He was predeceased by: his daughter Tammy Johnson Byrd; and his sisters, Mary J. Garner and Lena J. Byrd. He is survived by: his wife Martha Garner Johnson; his children, Lynn Hardee of Benson, Dewitt Hardee of Benson, Sheila Capps of Benson, Mike Capps of Benson, Jennifer Smith and Joey Smith of Angier; his son-in-law Chris Byrd of Benson; his grandchildren, Bradley Byrd (Jamie), Brooke Byrd, Melanie Hardee, Jonathan Hardee, Sam Smith, Trevor Capps, Reece Capps and Abner Capps; and his great grandchild Rhett Byrd. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
