He was predeceased by: his parent Herbert Smathers; his wife Gladys Shipman Smathers; and his brother Ansel Smathers. He is survived by: his parent Agnes Lindsey Smathers; his children, Tammy Creasman (Danny) of Waynesville, Deloris Cochran (Jeff) of Canton and Thomas "Tommy" Smathers of Canton; and his siblings, Bennie Jo Sutton (Bill) of Canton and Larry Smathers of Canton. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
