He is survived by: his wife Peggy; his children, David and Kathleen Malone; his parent Chapin; and his parents-in-law, Petra, Jason and Leigh. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of John C. Engler to the Crisis Assistance Ministry of Charlotte.
