Josie Lee Stewart Obituary
Josie (Jo) Stewart, formerly of Charlotte, age 102 passed away on June 8, 2023, at The Gables on Pelham in Greenville, SC. She was the beloved daughter of the late John William Burnette and Maude Kelly Burnette.
Jo was born in Toccoa, GA, attended the Georgia State College for Women and worked for the U.S. Naval Air Station in Hampton Roads, VA during WWII. Jo was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 10 years and attended every baseball game, band and orchestra concert, school function and Boy Scout event for her three sons. Jo was a life-long member of Grace United Methodist Church and was awarded "Woman of the Year" by the church members. Jo's passions were her family, her church, and her garden.
Jo is preceded in death by her loving husband of 72 years, Thomas (Tom) Hugh Stewart of Charlotte. She is survived by her three sons, James "Jim" Stewart and his wife Margot of Greenville, SC; Donald "Don" Stewart and his wife Rose of Daniel Island, SC; and John Stewart of Charlotte, NC. Jo is also survived by four grandchildren: Ryan and wife Milena; Catherine and husband Matt; Courtney; Margaret and husband Jim and six great-grandchildren Gram, Olivia, Sloan, Heath, Josie, and Harrison.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Deborah White for the loving and compassionate care she provided to Jo for the past 11 years.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM on Thursday June 15, 2023, with memorial services following at 1:30 PM in the chapel at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
Memorials in Mrs. Stewart's name may be made to the American Red Cross, Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
