He was predeceased by: his parents, Carolyn Boylston Hopkins and Robert Matthews Hopkins, Sr.; and his granddaughter Caroline Eloise McMahan. He is survived by: his children, Thomas Hopkins (Jackie) of Roanoke, VA, Caroline Coffron (Steve) of Charlotte, NC and Liza McMahan (Skye) of Charlotte, NC; his grandchildren, Shirley Arriola, Hank Hopkins of Roanoke, VA, Lucy, Charlotte Coffron of Charlotte, NC, Shep and Frazier McMahan of Charlotte, NC; and his sisters, Jean Pfaff and Lynn Hopkins of Charleston, SC.

Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be held for the immediate family on April 16, 2021 at 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church.
