He was predeceased by: his parents, John Henry Murphy and Mae Haley Murphy; his wife Maggie Robinson Murphy; his son Johnnie Ray Merritt; and his siblings, Emily Mae Murphy Dowe and Rudolph Murphy.
He is survived by: his brother Charlie Murphy of Leland, NC; his grandchildren, Malcom Carter of Rose Hill and Maya Merritt of Durham, NC; his brother-in-law Irving Dowe Jr. of Leland, NC; his nephew Devon Tymir Spencer of Clinton, NC; and his cousin Ella Mathis of Delway, NC.. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
