He was predeceased by: his parents, Junious Felton and Nancy Eloise Jones Coats; his brother Jimmy Felton Coats; and his brother-in-law Furman Colbert. He is survived by: his wife Dixie Owen Jordan; his children, Tony Wayne Coats (Sherri) of Roseboro and Donna Coats Bullard (Jeff) of Roseboro; his stepdaughter Dana Jordan Jones (Jeff) of Clinton; his grandchildren, Austin Wayne Coats, Bryson Reide Coats, Abbey Grace Bullard and Jackson Lee Bullard; his stepgrandchild Jayna Madison Jones; his siblings, Steve Coats (Brenda) of Raleigh, Deborah Diane Coble (Earl Gray Coble) of Garland, Nancy Kay Colbert of Apex and Jackie Coats Ormond (Willis) of Angier; and his pet Shylo. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
