He was predeceased by: his parents, Baswell Bee Barnett and Glennie Whaley Barnett; and his child Thomas Scott Barnett. He is survived by: his wife Melissa Dean McCoy Barnett (Kinston); his children, Jane Michelle Barnett Tripp and Daniel Stephen Barnett (Stacie Pate Barnett); his grandchildren, Taylor Dawn Barnett and Mallory Jane Tripp; and his sisters, Esther Barnett Burkett and Jackie Barnett Hill (Gary Hill).
