He was predeceased by: his parents, Larn McGillian Sams and Clatie Mae Phillips Sams; and his son David Wayne Sams. He is survived by: his wife Edna Brown Sams; and his daughters, Shelby Turpin (David) and Donna Sams Jackson (Danny). He is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
