She was predeceased by : her parents, Jesse Alton Jernigan and Lizzie Hackney Jernigan; her husband Richard James Sykes; her son Don Richard Sykes; and her sisters, Edith McNeill, Lillian Ammons, Rebecca Williams and Geneva Smith.

She is survived by : her son Stephen Lee Sykes; her grandchildren, Kimberly Sykes Price (Elmer Price III) and Chris Sykes (Brittany Sykes); her great grandchildren, Amanda Baker (Nathan), Kara Carter (Jason), Dustin Price, Colton Sykes and Ryder Sykes; and her great great grandchildren, Lenna Poole, Braylon Carter, Brody Baker, Wyatt Baker, Karma Carter, Carter Price, Cannon Carter and Owen Baker. She is also survived by her loving family and friends.

A graveside service was held on Friday, April 19th 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Maplewood Cemetery (1621 Duke University Rd, Durham, NC 27701).
