He is survived by: his wife Linda Austin Overman; his children, Angela Byrd (Mike) of Creedmore, Stacee Lassiter (Jimmy) of Goldsboro, James Overman, Jr. (Bonnie) of Richmond, Virginia, David Overman of Whiteville, Penny Ellington (Todd) of Oxford, Kimberly Lewis of Brevard and Emily Cobb; and his siblings, Gene Overman of Franklinton and Pam Gates of Silver City. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
