He was predeceased by: his parents, Dewey F. Ayers, Sr. and Pearl Howell Ayers. He is survived by: his wife Gayle Wray Ayers; his sister Nancy Bateman of Eden; his nephew James Russell "Russ" Bateman, Jr. of Eden; and his great-nephew Tray Bateman of Chapel Hill. He is also survived by two step-daughters, three step-sons, six grandchildren and one great grandson.
