He was predeceased by: his parents, John Early and Bettie Bowers Saunders; his great grandchild Layla Williams; and his sister Marcelle Light. He is survived by: his wife Mildred Neal Saunders of Eden; his children, Brenda Chilton, Janet Gardner (William) of Eden and John Rogers Saunders of Wilmington; his grandchildren, Ian Williams (Samantha), Janland Roberts, Katie Chilton and Kevin Chilton; his great grandchildren, Lyndzey Minter, LeiAnnah Minter, Saijel Williams, Sydnie Williams and John "Landon" Roberts; and his siblings, Ruth Rumbley, Betsy Wray (J. C.), Mamie Hairfield and Bobby Saunders (Neva). He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
