He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Townsend and Agnes Carroll Townsend; his former wife Shirley Davis Townsend; his brothers, Lester, Fred and Neil Townsend; and his grandson Michael Wayne Townsend.

He is survived by: his wife Marion Owen Townsend; his children, Arthur Wayne Townsend (Kim) of Garner, Michael Keith Townsend (Lori) of Lillington, Maria Townsend (Bill) of Stella and Mary Lynne Blanton (John) of Bear Creek; and his siblings, Carroll Townsend of Red Springs, James Townsend of Ash and Emma Davis of Orrum. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in his memory to St. Jude's Children Hospital.
