He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman W. Ellis and Ruby Rose Ellis; and his siblings, Herman Ellis, George Ellis, Dorothy Perkins, Ruth Best, Sarah Avery and Rose Kornegay.
He is survived by: his wife Martha Ann Gurley Ellis; his children, Janice Ellis of Greenville, Meredith Ellis of Blounts Creek and David Ellis, Jr. (Janie) of Goldsboro; his grandsons, Peter Ellis and Mark Ellis (Cheryl); his great grandchild Morgan Zumbaugh (Chuck); and his sisters, Carolyn Thompson of Goldsboro and Cleone Ellis of Charlotte.
