He was predeceased by: his parents, Esten Lewis Herring, Sr. and Mary Gladys Williams Herring; his wife Elise Moose Herring; and his brothers, John Roger Herring and Gerald Keith Herring.

He is survived by: his children, Steven Lewis Herring and Deborah Herring Perry (Tom); his grandchildren, Scott Herring, Stephanie Herring and Lindsey Herring; his great grandchildren, Elise Tracey, Annabella Herring and Lillian Catherine Lutz; his siblings, James Lamont Herring and Mary Ann Herring; and his close friend Jean A. Hollowell.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in his memory to Shriner's Children Hospital or to Providence United Methodist Church.
