He was predeceased by: his parents, Roy Thomas Smiley and Athealine Mary Berry Smiley; and his half-sister Jane Ramsey Shipp. He is survived by: his wife Gloriadine Duncan Smiley; his daughters, Allison Smiley Penwell (David) of Chapin, SC and Angela Jay Smiley (Steven Aldridge) of LaGrange; his grandchildren, Jacob Walker Smiley of Charlotte and Alexandria Skye Penwell of Greenville, SC; and his brother Thomas Grier Smiley.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in his memory to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 10093, Goldsboro, NC 27530 or to Adamsville Baptist Church, 1302 N. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro, NC 27534.
