She was predeceased by: her parents, Donnie Lewis Barnette and Mary Ruth Stroud Hare; her husband Billy Ray Newsome; her son Elwood Gerald Best; her half-sister Mary Whaley; and her great grandchildren, Noah Kornegay and Ella Kornegay.
She is survived by: her children, William Donnie Best (Linda) of Goldsboro, David Glenn Best of Mount Olive, Mary "Kay" Powell (Ken) of Calypso, Vicki Taylor (Timmy) of Albertson, Traci Best of Goldsboro and Crystal McCullen (Donald) of Goldsboro; and her half-sisters, Gloria Southerland of Warsaw and Diana Buford (Jesse) of Mount Olive. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.
