He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Lee Gilbert and Violet Woodward Gilbert; and his brothers, Bob and Billy Gilbert. He is survived by: his wife Joan Starnes Gilbert; his children, Angelia McNeely (Joe) of Hudson and Michael Gilbert (Kay Lynn) of Granite Falls; his stepchildren, Chad, Jeremy Benfield of Granite Falls and Lisa Bracken (Matt) of Asheville; and his sister Margie Sweet of Granite Falls.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be sent to Temple Hill Baptist Church, 4400 Temple Hill Church Road, Granite Falls, NC 28630.
