He was predeceased by: his parents, J. Hastings Whiteside and Alma Scotten Whiteside; his grandparents, John and Anna Scotten; and his brother Jere.
He is survived by: his wife Karen Helbig Whiteside; his daughters, Jennifer (Bill Campbell), Amy (Dave Dobbins), Emily (Gillian Campbell) and Mara (Halle Dobbins); and his nieces and nephews, Jere Whiteside, Skip, Tom Helbig, Kristen Archibald, Megan Whiteside and Tara Whiteside Hadzinumanbegovic.
