He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, William James and Amy Shields Edwards; his spouse Bennie Harris; his children, Gibby, Woody, Nancy, Ralph (Ruth) of Oak Ridge, NC, Ash, Ruby, Tia and Justin Martin; his grandchildren, Maya and Georgia; his children, Graeme and Kate Waitzkin; his grandchildren, Miles, Shields and Wills; his children, Amy and Gray Wilson; his grandchildren, Julia and James; his child Lindsay Allen; and his brother John Wesley Edwards of Charlotte. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.
He served on the boards of the YMCA, Greensboro Merchants Association, Piedmont Sales Executives, Salvation Army, Redevelopment Commission, Chamber of Commerce, Greensboro Housing Foundation, Wachovia Bank and the Governor's Council on Aging.
