He was predeceased by: his parents, Evan Dossie and Bessie Mabel Canipe; his wife Retha; his son Phillip; and his sister Lois Canipe (Rachel McNeeley).

He is survived by: his siblings, Sarah Heffner (Kenneth) of Hickory, NC, Marcus Canipe (Dorothy) of Georgetown, TX, Earl Canipe of Abingdon, VA and Joyce Greene of Asheville, NC.; and his siblings' children, Greg and Janet Cook of Morganton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Hickory Baptist Church in Fred's name.
