It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Harry Lee Whitener of Hickory, North Carolina, born in Catawba, North Carolina, who passed away on January 30, 2021, at the age of 93, leaving to mourn family and friends. He was predeceased by: his parents, Gordon Lee Whitener and Susie McGill Whitener; his sisters, Hazel Whitener Chiles, Alice Whitener Hawthorne and Susie Frances Whitener; and his siblings' children, David Hawthorne (Claudia) and Joy Hamilton Washburn (Karl).
He is survived by: his sister Jane Whitener Hamilton (Thomas) of Newton; his sibling's children, Susan Hawthorne Cain, Thomas Lee Hamilton (Karen) and Daniel Whitener Hamilton (Beth); and also, Chrissy Cain Brown (Evan), Elizabeth Whitener Hamilton, Brian Lee Cain and Thomas Milton Hamilton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gordon and Susie Whitener Scholarship Fund, c/o Bethel United Church of Christ, 4547 Bethel Church Road, Hickory, NC 28602.
