He was predeceased by: his parents, Collis Sumlin and Vergie Coffey Sumlin; his son Paul D. Sumlin; and his siblings, Tracey Sumlin, Monroe Sumlin, Roy Sumlin and Vergie Arnette.
He is survived by: his wife Ethel Foster Sumlin; his daughter Betty S. Norman (Ralph Gene) of Lenoir; his sister Mildred Wright of Hudson; and his granddaughters, Hope Coffey, Rebekah White and Katie Richards. He is also survived by five great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
