He was predeceased by: his parents, Scott H. Shumate and Ruby W. Shumate; and his sister Susan S. Villiard. He is survived by: his wife Martha A. Shumate; his daughters, Sarah E. Shumate of Hickory and Susannah S.; his son-in-law Olin M. "Tripp" Whitener III of Draper, VA; and his grandchildren, Louise V. and Reid T. Whitener of Draper.
