He was predeceased by: his parents, William Hiram and Stella Philips Phillips of Virginia; his wife Cynthia "Cindy" Ann Ward Phillips; his son Jerry Gene Phillips, Jr.; and his siblings, Charlotte Lambert, James Phillips, Hansel Phillips, Ward Phillips, Raymond Phillips, Richard Phillips and Leaman Phillips.

He is survived by: his children, Jennifer Kinney (Chris) of Asheboro, Matthew Phillips (Leslie) of Archdale, Mark Phillips (Angel) of Trinity, Adam Phillips (Angel Allen) of Trinity, Kelly Phillips of Delaware and Kayla Miller of Trinity; his grandchildren, Haven Kinney, Jordan Kinney, Ethan Kinney, Lucas Phillips, Nicholas Phillips, Sebastian Phillips, Natalie Phillips, Cameron Phillips, Haden Phillips, Isabel Phillips, Maven Phillips, Noah Phillips, Cali Phillips, Scarlett Rose Phillips, Taylor Phillips Andrew Phillips, Alicia Allen, Seth McGaugh, Tristan Dean, Chandler Dean, James Hutto and Lacy Hutto; and his siblings, Carolyn "Carol" Reid of Trinity, Virginia Garner of Myrtle Beach and Larry Phillips of Greer. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
