He was predeceased by: his parents, Arthur Dewey and Betty Tyre Simpson; his wife Ellen Gardner Simpson; and his siblings, Garland Simpson, Wesley Simpson, Myrtle Simpson and Rachael Hahn.

He is survived by: his children, Dewey "Butch" Simpson (Lynette) of Jamesville and Janet Simpson; his sister Loretta Cullipher of Williamston; and his grandchildren, Carly Connor and Carson Simpson.
