He was predeceased by: his mother Betty Moore Whittington; his daughter Sarah Whittington; his grandchildren, Chris Ussery and Chancellor Ussery; and his siblings, Plaz Whittington, Sr. and Eva Whittington Helton.
He is survived by: his children, James O. Whittington, Jr. (Melinda) of Lenoir and Betty Ussery (Leroy) of Maiden. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews.
