He was predeceased by: his wife Dorothy Newman Hanes; his sons, Jeff Hanes, Keith Hanes and Ricky Hanes; and his siblings, Belvin Hanes, John Haynes, Calvin Hanes, Dale Foust and Nannie Hege.

He is survived by: his children, Randy Hanes of Winston Salem and Regina Robbins (Rev); his brother Travis Hanes (Evva) of Clemmons; and also Dana of Winston Salem.
