He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Chavis and Flossie Chavis; and his siblings, Frances Butler Chavis, Wilson Chavis and William "Can" Chavis.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Chavis; his children, Holli Pittman (Jessie) of Lumberton, NC, Kaye Brewer (Gerald) of Winston-Salem, NC and Clayton Freeman (Tammy) of Lumberton, NC; and his brother Grady Chavis (Cynthia) of Pembroke, NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
