He is survived by: his son Robert Earl Chavis; his siblings, Wenford Chavis, James Chavis, Robert Chavis, Franklin Chavis, Danny Chavis, Ernest Chavis, Willie Albert Chavis, Lessie Ree Chavis and Martha Ree Chavis; his wife Nancy Chavis; his children, Earl Burns of Winston-Salem, Gregory Chavis of Pembroke, Mark Pringle of Winston-Salem, Earlene Chavis Atkins of Pennsylvania, Patricia Harris Chavis of Maxton, Denita Chavis of Alabama, Hannah Oxendine of Pembroke and Lacy Shifflett of Pembroke; and his sister Retha Mae Brierley. He is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
