He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Allen Mathis and Nina Mathis of Marion; his wife Mabelann Reeb Mathis; his children, Aaron Mathis (Bonnie) and Amy Thomas (Stacy); his siblings, Diane Davis (Larry) of Rock Hill, SC and Jerry Mathis (Roseanne) of Hendersonville, NC; his grandchildren, Ashely Thomas, Brianna Willis (Jake), Christen Kerlin (Taylor), Taylor Griffin (Sam) and Tanner Mathis; and his siblings-in-law, Melvin Reeb and Darlene Maedel of Ontario, Canada. He was also cherished by nieces and nephews.
